The mentoring program for new lawyers is designed to elevate the competence, professionalism and success of new lawyers. Mentoring creates an opportunity for an experienced lawyer to provide professional guidance and to share practical knowledge and skills with a new lawyer during the critical transition period from law student to legal practitioner.

Illinois Supreme Court Rule 795(d)(12) added Lawyer-to-Lawyer mentoring as an activity to satisfy the professional responsibility CLE credit in order to:

• Promote integrity, professionalism, and civility;
• Advance the commitment to eliminate bias and divisiveness within the legal system;
• Raise awareness of professional responsibility issues; and
• Spread best practices and the highest ideals in the practice of law.

The McLean County Bar Association's Mentoring Program has been approved by the Illinois Supreme Court Commission on Professionalism to provide ethics CLE credits for mentor and mentee participants.  Mentors and mentees will receive six ethics credits if they complete the following requirements:

Mentor and New Lawyer Checklist

• Participate in program orientation
• Sign Internal Lawyer Mentoring Agreement or the External Lawyer Mentoring Agreement and provide copy to Program Administrator
• Develop Mentoring Plan and provide copy to Program Administrator
• Participate in a minimum of eight (8) face-to-face meetings
• Attest to plan completion and provide Plan Completion Attestation to Program Administrator
• Complete Attorney Application: Mentoring CLE Certificate to obtain professional responsibility credit
