on or before February 21st. ISBA Standing Committee on Law-Related Education and McLean County Trial Courts Seek Bar Association Volunteers As Vice Chair of the Illinois State Bar Association Standing Committee on Law-Related Education and Regional Coordinator of the 2010 Mock Trial Region IV Downstate Invitational, I am pleased to announce a new partnership between the McLean County Trial Courts and the ISBA Standing Committee On Law-Related Education. On Friday, February 12, 2010, the McLean County Law & Justice Center will host the 2010 ISBA Mock Trial Downstate Regional Invitational. Approximately a dozen teams from high schools throughout the Central and Downstate Regions of Illinois are expected to attend and compete to go to the Mock Trial Invitational Finals to be held at University of Illinois – Springfield on Saturday, March 13, 2010. Eleventh Judicial Trial Court Administrator Will Scanlon has permitted the use of the Law & Justice Center for the Central and Downstate high schools to compete to move on to the Finals. Each team will have the opportunity to compete twice, representing the plaintiffs and defendants, in the 2010 Mock Trial case, Logan Lovell v. Pat Sainsbury. Case materials, schedule, and rules & procedures for the ISBA Mock Trial Invitational are available online at: http://www.isba.org/teachers/mocktrial/index.html Friday, February 12, the Law & Justice Center courtrooms will be open and available for the Mock Trial teams to use. President’s Day will be observed on Monday, February 15 at which time the courtrooms will be closed and locked. Attorneys will be in their offices working on Friday but there is no court. This is the perfect time to volunteer to assist the ISBA Standing Committee on Law-Related Education to come to court to assist in judging the high school teams during the regional invitational. Here is a tentative schedule for the February 12 Regional Mock Trial Invitational. Building opens 7:30 AM Team registration (lobby area) 8:00 – 9:45 AM First round (6-8 courtrooms, 3rd floor) 10:00 – 11:00 AM Morning Break 11:00 – 11:15 AM Second round (6-8 courtrooms, 3rd floor) 11:15 AM – 12:15 PM Lunch Break/Scoring 12:15 – 1:45 PM Announcement of “Final 4” teams 1:45 PM Third round (“Final 4” teams) 2:00 – 3:00 PM Afternoon Break/Scoring 3:00 – 3:15 PM Announcement of Final Scores/Seedings 3:15 PM Exit building 3:15 – 4:00 PM
As you can see, all teams in attendance will compete at 10 AM and again at 11:15 AM. Scoring will be ongoing and a third round will be held between the top 4 teams at 2 PM. The two highest scoring teams will earn the right to advance to the Mock Trial Finals in Springfield on March 13, 2010. The next two highest scoring teams’ names will be forwarded to the ISBA Standing Committee on Law-Related Education to be considered for inclusion as “wild card” teams at the Finals Invitational in March. To produce the best results for the teams coming to the Law & Justice Center, it would be helpful to have 4 scoring judges in each of the 6 courtrooms for a total of 24 volunteers for each of the first two rounds. Only 8 volunteers will be needed for the 4-team final round to determine the final seedings that will be submitted for participation in the March Finals.
